Virtual competitions get the blood pumping for MAPL XC members
The Mid-Atlantic Prep League's cancelation of inter-league in-person competitions due to the COVID-19 health crisis did not deter its cross country runners this past fall. Five of the six member schools participated in two virtual 5K's where the schools ran at their respective locations and submitted their times in the friendly competition. Each school developed a handicapping system for their specific home course, allowing them to accurately compare times from very different courses from around the league.
"It was honestly a fun project and I think it has given me ideas for possible events in the future. I know other conferences and leagues have used this as a model of what is possible right now, " noted William Sodano, Associate Director of Athletics at The Peddie School.
Meet #1 included 117 total runners taking place between the dates of October 23rd and October 28th while Meet #2 took place between October 30th and November 9th and featured 91 runners.
