LAWRENCEVILLE — After tough 2018 campaigns, the Peddie School and Lawrenceville School baseball teams have been making the adjustments necessary to change their fates in 2019.

With an improved lineup this season, Peddie has come out swinging to the tune of 17 runs in two games. Six of those came in the first inning Saturday as the Falcons started toward a 9-1 victory over Lawrenceville.

That gives head coach Erik Treese’s team its second win in as many games to start 2019, almost half as many victories (five) as it had all of last year.

“We’re communicating well, and, in both games, we’ve come out and jumped on the pitcher from the start,” Peddie junior first baseman Cam Bariteau said.

Bariteau had a lot to do with the win over the Big Red. The transfer from St. Paul’s in New Hampshire banged a two-run double to right-center field in the first inning. Then, after getting walked twice, Bariteau, who is also a defensive tackle for the Falcons football team, legged out an infield single with the bases loaded to drive in another run in the sixth inning.

“I think I surprised them on that one,” Bariteau said with a smile.

Lawrenceville (0-2) may have surprised the visitors a little by keeping the game from reaching 10-run rule status.

Even though Peddie had its big first inning and added two more runs in the top of the third, head coach Steve LaRochelle’s refused to get KOed early for a second straight game.

With sophomore first baseman Lucas Simms knocking in designated hitter Jake Simpson in the bottom of the third and senior pitcher Lucas Maloney throwing four solid innings in relief of freshman starter Hawkins Sutter, the Big Red calmed the game and gave themselves a chance.

“We really came out ready today, with a lot of energy,” Simms said. “Like coach says, we have to come out every day wanting to get better. We still have to tighten some of the small things, but we’re getting there.”

The Hamilton resident, who, like Bariteau, was batting in the No. 6 hole, went 2-for-2 to account for half of his team’s hits. He started the hitting with a second-inning single, then tripled to lead off the sixth, but was stranded there by Falcons reliever Jake Meneskie, who took over for starter Latrell Reid after four innings.

“I was looking to hit the ball hard,” said Simms, who is in his second year with the L’ville varsity, which won four games in 2018.

Chris Conyers and Jayden McMillan had the other safeties for the Big Red, while Aaron Kats led Peddie with three hits. Bariteau, Justin Moreno (three stolen bases) and Jimmy Famularo also had multiple hits to direct the Falcons’ growing attack.
